Welcome Back News and Notes from Principal Carosso

Dear Lahainaluna ʻOhana:

As we head into the new school year, I want to thank you again for the trust and patience you showed us during the past twelve months. While there were plenty of challenges for students, families, and staff alike, everyone showed their pride for Lahainaluna and willingness to work together to do the best for our keiki. For that, I am very grateful. Thank you.

This coming year will bring some changes, and I wanted to take this chance to inform you of what to expect and updates as we move forward.

  • Opening of School Year Dates:

    • Freshman & New Student Orientation Day - Tuesday, August 8 (Report to Cafe)

    • All Students - Wednesday, August 9 (Report to Period 1)

      • Monday/7-Period Schedule (7:45am-2:20pm)

  • LHS 2023-2024 Official School Year Calendar

  • LHS Bell Schedule - Last year, the staff worked hard to develop a seven period modified-block bell schedule. Students will take seven courses, and meet three times a week during one short, and two long class periods. With a few exceptions due to holidays, on Mondays students will be at school from 7:45am-2:00pm, and Tuesday thru Friday from 7:45am-1:45pm.

  • Uniform Policy SY 2023-2024 - Students must be in a red, white, grey, or black Lahainaluna t-shirt or polo Monday thru Friday. Boarding Department, athletic team, or school club shirts are permissible if they are in the approved colors and have the LHS logo or name. Traditional LHS uniform t-shirts and polos will be on sale at BTS Registration.

  • Facilities Update -

    • The new track and turf in the Stadium is nearing completion, and we should be able to use the facility for practice within a couple of weeks. A new scoreboard should be in place shortly after that.

    • The new roof on I Building is almost done, and teachers should be allowed back in before August 1.

    • Construction of the two story multi-classroom building is progressing, and we should be able to move in before the start of the 2024-2025 school year.

    • The electric and fire alarm upgrades are continuing, and plans for the proposed reroof of L Building, renovations to Malo Dorm, and new scoreboards for the softball field and gymnasium are making progress.

As a staff, this year our Academic Plan focuses on decreasing the achievement gap of our high-needs students, increasing the use of innovative and high-engagement teaching strategies, and promoting a campus where students and staff feel safe, supported, and successful. We’re excited to renew efforts post-Covid in building school spirit and ensuring the social-emotional needs of students are met.

My first year at Lahainaluna made clear to me that this is a school like no other, where tradition and the connection between community and school runs deep. There were countless moments where the pride and love of the school was awe inspiring. It makes me hopeful for this next year as we continue on our journey to serve the students of Lahainaluna.
