October 16 Reopening Update

Lahainaluna ʻOhana,

Today begins Homecoming Week in many more ways than one. We are all excited to once again have students on campus, and to have Lahainaluna looking, sounding, and feeling like the school this community loves.

I understand many still have concerns and reservations over the health and safety of campus, and this link will take you to the Health & Safety Guidance for Reopening Lahaina Schools. The Department of Health (DOH) and Department of Education (DOE) have deemed campus safe to reopen, and this document shares detailed data and the mitigation strategies for air quality, evacuation routes, and other links.

The DOE is also providing bus service from West, South, and Central Maui pickup locations. Information for locations and times can be found here - Lahaina Schools Transportation Schedule. If you have not already filled out a bus application, an online form can be found here - School Bus Application. Paper applications will also be available at bus pickup locations, and don’t worry, all students who show up will be allowed to ride the bus for the first few days while we get all the paperwork organized.

Additionally, all students will be eligible for free breakfast and lunch for at least the next two weeks. The State is working to provide this service for longer, but it is confirmed for the remainder of October.

We welcomed Boarders back to our dorms yesterday afternoon. Lahainaluna isn’t Lahainaluna without our Boarding program, and we’re so grateful to have them coming back. We are having talks about opening the Boarding program to students who have been displaced, but a lot of that depends on our ability to provide enough staff to ensure safety with more students. We do have vacant positions in Boarding, both permanent and also on a substitute basis. Having people who could come in on an emergency substitute basis to fill in when staff are absent would be a great help. If you are interested in joining the team, please contact our VP of Boarding, Paul Passamonte, at [email protected]

Amazing football game last night, students back on campus today, Homecoming Week, girls’ volleyball, Boarders, clubs meeting again, assemblies, and most importantly teachers being back and able to mentor and teach in their own classrooms; it’s been a long journey, but Lahainaluna is coming home where we belong.

Thank you everyone for your patience, understanding, and trust,

I Mua Lahainaluna!!!
