Friday, 3/27/2020 Letter to Student and Parents

For our students:



To all Lahainaluna students, first of all, we want to say – We Miss You! We hope you are all doing well and are ready to connect with each other and your teachers. Starting Monday, March 30th, please begin checking your school Gmail account. Your teachers are anxious to check in and re-connect with each of you. Help is also available for you every step of the way. If you are stuck or having a difficult time, please text or call (808)664-0317. We can’t wait to hear from you.

Aloha Parents and Ohana of Lahainaluna High School,



Let me begin by saying how much we miss all of our 900+ students. We are concerned for our student’s health and well-being, as well as their families. We would like to thank everyone for your patience and support, especially our health professionals, grocery store employees, first responders and all other essential operations personnel.



As we embark in “Distance Learning”, the teachers and staff of Lahainaluna are committed to serving our most important assets – your children! The next few weeks will not be easy. There will be mistakes, problems, and concerns along the way. However, there will be more successes, happiness, hope, laughter, fun and purpose! We understand many of you may be experiencing this crisis differently. Please know we are here to patiently support our students and you throughout this challenging time. Please do not stress over the schoolwork via distance learning or printed packets. Encourage your child to read daily, journal about what they have been doing, or help prepare a meal where Math and Science can become hands on learning! Our mental health is also extremely important. Enjoy this time with your child, play games, communicate, reduce technology use and spend quality time together while we are required to stay at home. Be creative!



Lahainaluna High School will continue to communicate information and updates through our weekly email blast, our school website and facebook page, and mass phone-messaging system. Please let us know how else we can help.



Lastly, don’t forget, all students can be provided breakfast and lunch daily at Lahaina Intermediate School with a drive by pickup. Students must be present in the vehicle. Breakfast is served from 7-8:30 am and lunch is served from 10:30 – 12 noon. Stay at home, stay healthy, and feel free to reach out to us. We will continue to learn and strive together to meet the needs of our sons and daughters during this challenging time.

Lahainaluna High School communicates via a program called SchoolMessenger. This program has student contact information provided by their families. SchoolMessenger sends out phone calls, emails and text messages. Please keep your information updated and add our email and phone number to your contacts to prevent the communication from being sent to spam.
In order to receive text messages families must "OPT IN" to the service. They can participate by sending a text message of “Y” or “Yes” to 67587. YThey can also opt out of these messages at any time by simply replying to one of our messages with “Stop”.
SchoolMessenger is compliant with the Student Privacy PledgeTM, so families can rest assured that their information is safe and will never be given or sold to anyone. Messages and Data rates from th eirservice provider may apply.

Free Spectrum Broadband and Wi-Fi Access for 60 days

Spectrum Broadband o Charter Communications is offering free Spectrum broadband and Wi-Fi access for 60 days to households with K-12 and/or college students who do not already have a Spectrum broadband subscription and at any service level up to 100 Mbps.

Hawaiian Telcom is offering free internet services two (2) months of free Internet service to households with K-12 and/or college students who currently do not subscribe to Hawaiian Telcom Internet service.
To sign up, families can call 643-8888.

Information on AP Classes/Exams

Message from Miss Kristy concerning AP classes/exams:

All AP exams scheduled for May will now be given online.

Beginning Wednesday, March 25 - students can "attend" free online, live AP review classes delivered by AP teachers from across America.
- The courses are optional, mobile-friendly & can be used alongside work given by our AP
teachers
- These courses will also be available on demand.
- Will focus on reviewing the skills & concepts from the first 75% of the school year. AND will
have supplemental lessons covering the final 25%.
- Go to the AP website on College Board to view dates & times for specific course lessons.
More dates will be added.

On Friday, April 3 - the full exam schedule will be released along with specific free-response question types that will be on each AP exam.
- For each AP course there will be 2 different testing dates to choose from.

*If there are any AP students who have limited or no access to mobile devices or computers please let Miss Kristy know immediately.

Breakfast and Lunch Pickup Service starting Monday, March 23, 2020

For all Lahainaluna HS students, as our campus closure is in effect now till Tuesday April 7th due to the Covid-19 virus, to help with providing meals to our students, a drive by breakfast and lunch pickup service will be available at the front entrance of Lahaina Intermediate School.

A limited number of breakfast and lunch will be served to students who are 18 years old or younger and present at the time of pickup.

The amount of meals served will be estimated and adjusted based on previous meals served. Due to food safety, the meal must be consumed within two (2) hours after service.

Meal service begins on Monday 3/23 (no meal on Thursday - Kuhio holiday)
Breakfast drive by pickup 7am-8:30am
Lunch drive by pickup 10:30am-12:00 pm

Reminder-limited amount available and will be adjusted based on previous meals served.

Class of 2020 Scholarship Information

Good afternoon seniors!

I have had many inquiries about scholarship applications and their deadlines. Here's what I want you to do:

1. Download a "PDF Scanner App" from your phone or tablet's App Store. I checked Google Play Store and the App Store on my ipad, they both have a few good FREE options.

2. Using the downloaded app, scan (take a picture) of each page of your scholarship application and email it to me by the posted deadline on the Scholarship Bulletin. You must email me only the scholarships that say to submit your application to me. All the other scholarships must be mailed to the address they provided by the deadline that they provided.

3. Transcripts - I am hyperlinking the Transcript page from our school's website for easier access.
- Print the Transcript Request Form.
- Fill it out with a blue or black ink pen.
- Take a picture of it using your new Scanner App.
- Email the form to this email: [email protected]

***The Foodland Scholarship application requirements have been amended (changed) by Foodland. To complete the application you must submit the 2 page application form only. You do NOT need to submit a recommendation, test scores or transcript. Your application must be emailed to me by 11:59pm on Monday, March 23. Currently we are in 2nd Place for the Foodland Shop for Higher Education Contest, this contest determines how many Foodland scholarships we receive. PLEASE SHOP AT FOODLAND!!! The contest ends on Friday, March 27.

Message from TA Principal Jeri Dean concerning school closure due to COVID-19

Aloha Students and Families of Lahainaluna,

As you may already be aware of the DOE's most recent announcement, please be informed of the following:

Effective Thursday, March 19, 2020, all DOE schools have been directed to close. There will be no entry onto Lahainaluna High school property for any reason throughout the duration of the shut down. At this time, teachers and all students will return on Thursday, April 30, 2020. For our Boarding students and Ohana, the return date will be shared as soon as it becomes available. Lastly, regarding school work for students, extended school year, graduation or other concerns, information will be provided as it is received by the school. Thank you for your understanding as this situation continues to be ever changing and fluid. With compassion and encouragement, please continue to be vigilant and safe.

David Malo 2020 Cancelled

Aloha, Lahainaluna Ohana,

It is with heavy heart that we announce the cancellation of our iconic, time-honored David Malo Day Ho'olaulea scheduled for April 4, 2020. It is also with an enormous amount of care, caution, and concern that we be stewards of our community, our humanity. We will take the advice, guidelines, and wisdom of W.H.O. and CDC to do our part to care for the health and welfare of our communal society, especially those most vulnerable to this pandemic. We are all in this together and must build a communal safety net.
We thank you for all the support you have given us these past 51 years. We will drive our energies to make next year's David Malo Day 2021, just as meaningful, relevant, and appreciative of our legacy and culture.
